October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which brings light to the work INCIGHT does all year long. From the very start, the founders of INCIGHT knew that there were two sides to the equation to open doors to more employment for people with disabilities. Equipping students and jobseekers with disabilities with preparedness tools for their future success was one step, but changing the hearts and minds of society and supporting the learning of employers, managers, HR teams and other fellow employees is another important way that INCIGHT can live up to our mission statement of “moving the world: expecting great contributions with people experiencing disabilities.”
While the INCIGHT Curriculum Team continues to create new lessons for high school students and jobseekers, we have also broken ground on a pilot series of recorded lessons and materials for employers, their managers and HR teams and their general employees. INCIGHT's programs have always aimed to support employers in making connections with jobseekers and growing in their understanding of creating a more inclusive workspace, but in the past year, by popular demand from several local businesses, the team at INCIGHT has developed workshop content for in-person training to support employers who are working to build a more inclusive workplace.
The curriculum team is taking the content developed from the in-person training and developing an easily-accessible on-demand resource for continuing education and professional development for employers. This series includes the same expectation-driven philosophy that INCIGHT believes is necessary for all growth and learning while also aiming to meet businesses at whatever stage they might be at in welcoming inclusion. Titles from this series include: Disability Demographic Deserves a Different Approach, Creating a Personal Data Privacy Plan and Welcoming Disclosure.
At the root, we know that when employers, managers and fellow employees understand more about disabilities and accommodations, they are more likely to recognize how they can build a more welcoming and expectant workplace. They also can see the problems and issues that are inherent in their business systems that might prevent an employee from feeling comfortable to share their disability status or struggle to succeed. Becoming aware of these situations and addressing issues within their particular industry or company is a step that can be taken by each member of their team. INCIGHT provides tools for employers to work through scenarios that might highlight areas that are worthy of more work or that need further consideration to develop resources for individual employees or customers.
We continue to meet new business contacts that are interested in learning and developing an inclusive workplace. As the interest from employers has grown, we feel the on-demand learning modules for employers will be a great tool. We think our online videos and learning materials will grow our reach and assist more companies to bring inclusive change to their workspace.
